What T-Shirt or Sign are your Employees Wearing?
During one of our PEAK Seminars, we talked about Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, a multibillion-dollar company. Although she is perhaps best known as giving Pink Cadallacs to her top sales people, her management approach is founded on “praising her employees to success”. She advises all her managers to imagine every single person wearing a sign around his or her neck stating “make me feel important.”
One of the seminar participants who signed up with two of her colleagues was looking for insights as to how to build a more inspired workplace as she was struggling a bit with her own mojo. Excited by Mary Kay Ash’s example, she developed her own version (which of course I now share during other seminars).
She now envisions every employee wearing a t-shirt that reads “I have an important contribution to make.” She told me that this enabled her to see every complaint as a contribution.
She remarked that, in just a few days, she noticed her employees smiling more, the work climate feeling lighter, and most surprising to her, she felt happier.
